Bio

Professor Behnam Fahimnia is the Chair of Supply Chain Management at The University of Sydney Business School. Since receiving his PhD in 2011, he has held various research and academic positions prior to his promotion to a Full Professor in 2016.

During the past decade, Behnam has made contributions to multiple research areas in the context of management science, in particular operations and supply chain management, with demonstrated practical applications across a wide breadth of industries. An expert specialist in applied and problem-driven research, Behnam has helped governments and industries develop decision-making skills and tools to create and manage efficient, resilient and sustainable supply chains. He is frequently consulted by Australian regulatory bodies as well as a range of businesses, from small and medium size companies to Fortune 500 corporations. To date, Behnam has led over 120 projects in food and beverage, logistics, retail, energy, oil and gas, automotive, telecommunication, and mining industries. With this experience, he has forged a strong and enduring program of industry-linked research which has resulted in substantial research funding of over $120m from the governments, industries and universities.

Behnam has published broadly in leading academic journals and is a regular keynote speaker at academic conferences and industry events. He currently serves as an associate editor for the Decision Sciences Journal, and has been a guest editor and a member of the editorial boards of several journals such as OMEGAIEEE Transitions on Engineering Management, Transportation Research: Part E, and International Journal of Production Economics.

Behnam has been recognised and continuously awarded for his passion and innovation in practice-oriented education every year since inception. He has developed a number of multidisciplinary courses as well as novel teaching initiatives for practice-oriented education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is a firm believer in critical thinking and holds high expectations for his students who learn not only about concepts and formulas, but also how to critically analyse different dimensions of business problems.

Research Interests

Behnam’s primary research areas are: (1) developing analytical models and decision-support tools for efficient and effective design, planning and optimisation of the supply chains, (2) understanding and formulating behavioural influences in organisational decision-making (the human factor in supply chain decision-making), (3) developing frameworks and decision-support tools for balancing economic, environmental and social sustainability of the supply chains (sustainable operations), and (4) developing and implementing risk mitigation strategies/tactics to improve supply chain robustness/agility.
