Richard's work background is in Information Systems, primarily in the area of design and development of back-end information systems and networks for small and medium sized companies. This includes the development and design of an inventory management system and various web-based back-end systems as well as the design of new ICT infrastructure. His undergraduate degree is in Information Systems with a focus on enterprise systems. Having completed a Master of Logistics Management as well as a major in Transport Management as part of a Master of Commerce (with Business Information Systems), he completed his PhD in transport at ITLS in March 2014. His area of research for his PhD was understanding dynamic responses to mitigation policies for intra-urban road freight emissions.

Throughout his time at ITLS he has been involved in a range of projects at ITLS ranging from the development of a web-based GPS/GPRS prompted-recall survey under the supervision of Associate Professor Stephen Greaves to a variety of projects relating to various elements of (primarily transport) infrastructure including the effects of High Speed Rail infrastructure on agglomeration and wider economy and social impacts, a major ARC-funded project on the provision of bicycle infrastructure on Sydney and its relationship to transport and health, and a project on how availability of infrastructure effects the location of firms. He is also heavily involved in the development of the new version of ITLS' land use, transport and environment strategy simulator and metropolitan infrastructure scanning tool (MetroScan) with Professor David Hensher and Professor Michiel Bliemer. Richard currently teaches Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at the postgraduate level with a focus on the application of GIS to spatial analysis of transport and logistics infrastructure and services.
