Bio

Dr Stephen Clibborn is a Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Work and Organisational Studies in the University of Sydney Business School. He is also an Associate Editor of the Journal of Industrial Relations and an experienced employment lawyer.

Stephen is a leading researcher in the field of employment relations and law, with particular interest in the regulation of low-waged work, including the working experiences of immigrants and the roles of stakeholders including government, employers, unions, NGOs and civil society in the application and enforcement of employment laws.

He is also a key research-based contributor to public debates about regulation of work. He is regularly invited to speak to policy audiences on his research. He has made influential submissions to Senate and Productivity Commission inquiries and is a regular commentator in the media on migrant work rights, experiences and regulation.

Stephen has extensive industry experience including in Australia as a senior associate in a national commercial law firm, and in the United States as both a legal manager in the headquarters of a multinational corporation in the fast moving consumer goods sector and in a not-for-profit organisation representing the interests of low-waged and unemployed workers.

Stephen teaches in both the undergraduate and postgraduate programs of the Business School. In semester 1, 2019 he is teaching WORK6116, Employment and the Law.

Research Interests

Dr Stephen Clibborn is a research expert in employment relations and law, particularly as it relates to the ‘real-world’ application of laws and policies. He specialises in regulation and its implications for national and international labour markets with two main areas of focus:

  1. The legal rights and working experiences of low-waged workers, including immigrants both with and without work authorisation, and the roles of stakeholders including government, employers, unions, NGOs and civil society in application and enforcement of employment laws;
  2. After completing his PhD entitled, 'Managing from Afar: International Transfer of Employment Relations Policies and Practices in US Multinational Corporations', he continues his research interest in management of employment relations across international borders within multinational corporations, with particular expertise in Australian and United States automotive industries, building knowledge on the roles of power, politics and laws in international transfer of policies and practices.
