Ir Prof. William H.K. Lam is currently a Chair Professor of Civil and Transportation Engineering and has been the Head of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department (CEE) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) from 2013 to 2019. He has also been an Honorary Professor at the Institute for Transport and Logistics Studies, The University of Sydney, Australia since 2015 and was appointed as the Chiang Jiang Chair Professor at the Beijing Jiaotong University from 2010-2013. Ir Prof. Lam has over 35-year professional experience in research and practice for planning and design of transport infrastructures. He is now a council member of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and the Past Chairman of Civil Division and of Logistics and Transportation Division, The HKIE. He has been the President of the Hong Kong Society for Transportation Studies from 1996 to 2019. Ir Prof. Lam is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the SCI Journal – Transportmetrica and is now one of the Co-Editors-in-Chief of Transportmetrica A: Transport Science. He is the Convenor of the International Advisory Committee of the International Symposium on Transportation and Traffic Theory and a member of the International Scientific Committee of the International Symposium on Transportation Network Reliability (INSTR). Ir Prof. Lam is the author of more than 300 Web of Science journal and conference proceedings papers together with 70 consultancy reports. His current h-index is 38 with the total number of 4865 citations in the Web of Science (as at February 2019).
During Ir Prof. Lam’s headship for CEE of the PolyU since July 2013, the Department has made remarkable achievements in both aspects of teaching and research. In the past 6-year period (2013 – 2019), the average income from consultancy projects is falling in the range of about US$ 1.7 M per year. The research grants, the number of PhD students and research staff have also significantly grown as shown in the following table. Under his leadership, PolyU was ranked the 15th best institution worldwide and the 1st in Hong Kong in the Civil and Structural Engineering discipline in QS Ranking 2019. The Department has made great improvement when comparing with the ranking of 50th in 2012.

Ir Prof. William H.K. Lam’s research interests include transport network modeling and infrastructure planning, travel demand forecasts and risk assessment, ITS technology and planning, public transport and pedestrian studies.
